Discover the very first edition of the Caribbean Lyric Festival, under the musical direction of Darwin Aquino and Alberto Rincon, recorded in the superb Eduardo Brito National Theater in Santo Domingo on May 9th 2021, in celebration of Europe Day! Organized by the Sinfonia Foundation and the European Union with the support of the Dominican Ministry of Culture, the event aims both to support the burgeoning careers of talented young Caribbean vocalists, and to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between islands. Out of the 116 applicants, eight of the most gifted artists have been chosen to participate: Joe Bertili (Guadeloupe), Valérie Brutus (Haiti), Natalia Dopwell (Trinidad and Tobago), Marie-Laure Garnier (French Guiana), José Heredia (Dominican Republic), Celia Sotomayor (Puerto Rico), and Héctor Rodríguez and Frank Ledesma (both of Cuba). The exceptional singers are accompanied by the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic.
On the program, you’ll find time-honored favorites of the repertoire like Bizet’s Carmen and Eduardo Di Capua’s O Sole Mio, but also works by local composers like Una Illusión, a Dominican bolero by Carlos Peguero Cruz, or La Bilirrubina by Dominican pop singer Juan Luis Guerra, arranged by Amaury Sánchez and Darwin Aquino (who also conducts the orchestra)!
