For the second time, The Saint Louis Women’s Chorale has commissioned Darwin to compose an extremely original new work for female chorus and chamber orchestra to open their 2026-27 season. La Ciguapa: Songs of an Island is rooted in Caribbean folklore. La Ciguapa is a legend, a mysterious woman from the Dominican Republic who cannot be captured or controlled, a vivid symbol of autonomy, freedom, and self-possession. She embodies the qualities of a mermaid that resulted from the mix of cultures in the Caribbean. The music features Dominican dances like The Jacana and rhythmic elements from The Palos.
